What we do

Our services

Independent Connection Provider

Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) compete with the regional distribution network operators (DNOs) and have to follow the same procedures and have the same exacting standards as dictated by the DNOs who will then adopt and maintain the works going forward.

Durkin and Sons operate nationally and also have the ability to supply HV cable and to offer system design.

Our business reputation is excellent and one of which we are justifiably proud; we will work with you to develop a workable bespoke solution to achieve the design that is best for you.

Civil Engineering

Durkin and Sons can help plan design and oversee construction projects that include power, road and water projects.

Directional Drilling

Directional drilling provides a trenchless safe method of installing pipes, ducts and cables where conventional open cut methods are not: possible, permitted, practical, environmentally or economically viable. Durkins use this method for:

  • Steel or polyethylene pipes from 25mmØ up to 1,200mmØ
  • Successfully drilled under areas such as rivers, estuaries, roads, railways, airports, contaminated landfill sites and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
  • Conduits can be for: water, oil, gas, electricity, sewerage, chemicals, communication ducts and outfalls
  • Ideal for bores from 25 metres up to 1500 metres in a wide range of ground conditions
  • Typically a surface launched technique, steered both horizontally and vertically
  • Short, medium or long lengths of pipe can be installed without intermediate pits
  • Pipes can be installed either straight or curved to steer clear of obstacles
  • By boring underground the working area is confined to points of entry and exit only
  • No disruption to road, river or rail traffic and no scarring of the landscape
  • Equipment works from surface with no need for deep excavations
  • DD is quick and in many cases has lower overall costs being unaffected by surface obstacles
  • Can be used to install pipes in changeable ground conditions
  • Durkin & Sons have the capability to drill up to 1km in length or up to 1200 mmØ

Pipe Bursting & Insertion

Pipe bursting and insertion is used in urban and rural areas to reduce disruption for road users, to reduce reinstatement costs and to protect the environment.

Small pits are excavated at each end of the pipe that is being replaced, then a section of old pipe broken out where a steel rod is inserted and used to pull a cutting tool back through the pipe.

The cone shaped cutting tool is then pulled through, breaking out the existing old cast iron pipe whilst also pulling through the new pipe.

Durkins are committed to using this technology in areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Suction Excavation

The benefit of suction excavation is that it protects staff from hand digging around potentially dangerous plant and minimises manual handling.

Utility Water Works

At the turn of the century we expanded our field of activities into water industry where we were successful in securing a 3 year term contract with Portsmouth Water for all their mains and services renewal works and in 2005 we were awarded their 5 years AMP Renewals Contract.

We were also awarded an AMP 5 Main laying Contract to August 2015, where works were to include replacement of 125 kilometres of water mains and associated services. This contract included in excess of 25 kilometres of mains re-laid each year along with associated service renewals. All types of main laying techniques are employed including slip-lining, directional drilling and pipe bursting.

In addition to these works we currently undertake domestic water meter installations, as well as Chlorination and testing of all mains and services

Route Feasibility / Studies / Topographical Surveys

Feasibility studies have a number of objectives, firstly identifying feasible routes, secondly to evaluate risk on the proposed route such as structures and any environmental areas of concern; impact on the local area and lastly cost estimates.

Durkin and Sons can also carry out desk-top geotechnical feasibility studies together with geological and geohazard risk assessment.

Traffic Highway Noticing

All our staff are fully compliant and have extensive knowledge on all aspects of New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (as amended by the Traffic Management Act 2004).

Route Records

Durkin can provide route records in a number of formats utilising various techniques. Simple line drawings, or GPS capture.

Accurate records of underground apparatus are crucial for prevention of accidents and the health safety and wellbeing of all construction staff who work on the road network.

Measurements are taken so that the route of any cable laid can be accurately recorded, and any deviation noted. Essential information such as type of cable, cable cross sections, duct type, colour, and joint bay locations are also fully recorded.

Haul Road

Soft, boggy wet ground conditions are a major health and safety issue so it is essential that traffic movements on such sites are properly assessed for safe working. Our haul roads are manufactured from sustainable hardwood (EKKI) and are one of the best ways of ensuring worker safety and the safe delivery of material to site with minimum environmental impact

Cables

Durkin and Sons have, over 40 years, established strong links with all the major cable manufacturers and in addition can offer cable system design.

Road Planing

Planing is often used as an alternative to the complete removal of the road surface. Partial removal allows the new surface to be directly overlaid onto the remaining sub layers thus saving time and cost.
